Artist
Born in 1983 in Ustrzyki Dolne, Zbigniew Blajerski graduated from the Faculty of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he completed his diploma in the studio of Professor J. Nowakowski.
Of all creative disciplines, sculpture is the one with which he chose to connect his artistic life. It has been his passion for nearly two decades and continues a family tradition. Ceramics is his preferred medium: its flexibility allows him to give physical form to abstract visions. His practice also encompasses wood, stone, metal, plaster and resin.
Torsos are the artist’s most characteristic body of work. The series draws on the Italian rotti tradition—sculptural forms rooted in the Renaissance and Mannerism that evoke the impression of objects marked by time, like ancient statues as they were once rediscovered.
Blajerski’s torsos are made by hand using German glazes. Although classical in form, their structure is distinctly contemporary. Line becomes the principal element through which the figure is constructed. Geometric interweavings shape the body; through their composition and colour, they carry meanings whose interpretation remains open to the viewer. Calm arrangements of undulating lines or restlessly entangled bands reveal the inner life of each figure.
