Artist
Jerzy ‘Jotka’ Kędziora (born 1947 in Częstochowa, Poland) is a sculptor, painter, designer and educator, and a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. His practice has developed through a sustained interest in kinetic art, sculptural experimentation and the relationship between the human figure, movement and space.
Kędziora is internationally recognized for his balancing sculptures: suspended figurative works engineered around a carefully calculated point of equilibrium. Responsive to wind and their surroundings, the sculptures introduce actual movement into the work while using the precarious human body as a metaphor for choice, uncertainty, persistence and contemporary existence.
The artist has participated in approximately 500 exhibitions in Poland and internationally. His balancing sculptures have been presented in major outdoor projects and cultural events across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the United States, including the Venice Biennale, Art Basel Miami, ArtTaipei and ARTZUID — the Amsterdam Sculpture Biennial.
In Poland, Kędziora has developed the Balancing Sculpture Trail, with works installed in public space in cities including Kraków, Częstochowa, Bydgoszcz and Warsaw. His permanent and long-term presentations demonstrate the ability of the sculptures to coexist with architecture, landscape and everyday urban life.
